For Defensive Driver Training, Powell takes you on public roads. Drivers are asked to drive individually, while the Powell instructor makes an assessment of their driving habits on an industry standard driver evaluation form. After both drivers have completed the first evaluation drive, the Powell instructor then conducts a demonstration of commentary driving. This demonstration drive utilizes the techniques discussed in the classroom session, with the goal of reinforcing good driving habits, and correcting any driver issues that the Powell Instructor has determined in the first evaluation.
The trainees then repeat the experience, this time talking about what they are doing as they drive, utilizing commentary defensive driving techniques, and the Powell instructor re-evaluates the trainee. At the conclusion of the course, the trainee is given a review of the improvements and any continuing issues, and a copy of the Powell traffic Management strategies Defensive Driving evaluation form. This form remains on file at the Powell office, and is only shared with the students’ company corporate trainers only if the graduate is subsequently involved in a crash or is classified as a High Risk driver by their company.
